Attorneys for John Walker Lindh argued yesterday that most U.S.
interrogators never read him his Miranda rights while in Afghanistan,
that his eventual waiver of those rights was under duress and that
his statements therefore cannot be used against him in court.
Lindh's attorneys filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria a
detailed narrative of the 21-year-old Californian's final weeks on
the run and in captivity in northeastern Afghanistan last November
and December. He was shot in the leg and wounded by grenade shrapnel
by Northern Alliance forces, then kept blindfolded and naked in a
metal shipping container once U.S. authorities took custody of him,
Lindh says.
