The battle for the right to operate the Internet's fifth-largest addressing suffix began in earnest Tuesday, as three Washington area groups joined others from around the world in a race to become the next operator of ".org."

Created alongside .com and .net more than a decade ago, .org is the online home to many of the world's political, nonprofit and philanthropic groups. With Internet addressing giant VeriSign Inc. slated to relinquish its hold on .org in December, Internet authorities are searching the globe to find a new home for the popular domain.
