Article: Ran Strand Barber Shop: Cut hair for entertainers set to perform at Tivoli Theater

BOOKER T. MONTGOMERY SR. 1920-2006

The Strand Barber Shop was right down the street from the Tivoli Theater, at 63rd and Cottage Grove Avenue, so it wasn't unusual for Sam Cooke or Jackie Wilson to drop in for a trim before a big show back in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The star would be greeted by the owner, Booker T. Montgomery Sr., who would cut the celebrity's hair, while one of Mr. Montgomery's sisters gave the star a manicure, and someone else shined his shoes. The Strand Barber Shop was a family place where big-name entertainers and neighbors sat side by side and talked barber shop talk.
