Classical music has always been central to my life and my love
for the arts. When I was a child, my father subscribed to those
classical part-works that used to arrive through the letterbox every
fortnight with a disc. This was my first introduction to the works
of the great composers, and I remember dancing to them in our front
room. At the age of ten I went to my first formal concert, where I
saw Malcolm Sargent conduct Peter and the Wolf and The Young
Person's Guide to the Orchestra.
I took up ballet in earnest until the age of 16, becoming more
and more interested in exploring why composers like Tchaikovsky and
