WE MAY not fully understand why humans need to spend around a
third of their lives asleep, but you only need to have one bad night
to realise just how important sleep is. And one in six British
adults has at least three such nights every week.
Sex is renowned for promoting sleep but other exercise should be
avoided in the evening. Little wonder that millions of us turn to
sleeping tablets in the misguided belief that they will help. Modern
sleeping tablets such as zopiclone are prescribed to around one in
50 of the UK adult population.
They may be useful in the short-term (up to 10 days) for
relieving the distress of acute insomnia caused by stressful
experiences.
