Some contests give away a car or a cruise. But the prize Lenora
Kater won in an essay contest was a horse of another color.
Literally.
On Friday, an equestrian-centered nonprofit that helps breast
cancer patients trotted out Kater's prize: a 15-year-old tri-
colored paint named Tres.
Kater's essay stood out among more than a dozen submitted to
Renee's Friends Fund, which typically offers financial assistance to
cover living expenses for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.
The fund, named for cancer survivor Renee Coble of Penrose,
usually helps with utilities, food, car repairs or insurance. This
is the first time it has given away a horse.
