Article: Gemayel, Assad discuss pact // Leaders meet as Lebanon faces power struggle over peace plan

BEIRUT, Lebanon President Amin Gemayel and Syrian President Hafez Assad yesterday discussed Assad's peace plan for Lebanon, amid growing signs of a power struggle over the plan between Gemayel and his nation's largest Christian militia, the Lebanese Forces.

Two days earlier, the Lebanese Forces, which rebelled against Gemayel's leadership last March, accused the president's security service and bodyguards of attempting to assassinate militia commander Elie Hobeika.

Gemayel claimed that Hobeika's men tried to kill him the same day by ambushing a motorcade of presidential cars. However, Gemayel was not in the convoy.
