Article: Matthew S. MacDowell, former POW

Matthew S. MacDowell, 73, a retired Army captain imprisoned by the Japanese in the Philippines for 33 months during World War II, died Wednesday at Loyola University's McGaw Hospital, Maywood.

Mr. MacDowell, who lived in Hillside recently, was the first to be released of the 86 Maywood men captured from the 192nd Tank Battalion of the 33rd Division.

Mr. MacDowell, a New York native, moved to the west suburbs as a child. He graduated from Proviso Township High School during the Depression. After working at a variety of jobs, he joined a Maywood-based unit of the Illinois National Guard, which was activated in 1940.
