The idea of cultural exchange is attractive, but few orchestras
from the communist world have visited Chicago in recent years and the
opportunity to hear the Cracow Philharmonic at Orchestra Hall last
night was something many listeners found exceptionally appealing.
If we take as a test of virtuosity the performance of the most
familiar work, the sixth Shostakovich symphony, the Cracow
Philharmonic has fine strings, but in the winds and brass lacks
players of the caliber of the best American ...
