Article: New TVs surround you with sound

LAS VEGAS Stereo television is taken one step further with "surround sound" that was demonstrated by several exhibitors at the winter Consumer Electronics Show that closed here Sunday.

Manufacturers such as NEC Home Electronics have taken the familiar Dolby system used in movie theaters and put it into speakers intended to be mounted at the rear or sides of a room where a TV monitor is placed. NEC had one of the more elaborate demonstrations at the show with two mini rooms of surround sound.

The company and others are going after the big market of TV viewers who watch movies. NEC pointed out that 80 percent of all movies made since 1979 were recorded in surround sound. Technically, ...
