WASHINGTON (AP) Education Secretary William J. Bennett today
appealed to the Soviet Union to "raise the Iron Curtain" and allow
American intellectuals, including himself, to teach in Soviet
classrooms and appear on television.
Bennett said he would welcome a visit in return by Soviet Deputy
Minister of Education Marina I. Juravleva to "teach classes on the
Soviet system."
He proposed the exchange in a speech prepared for delivery today
to the Chamber of Commerce in Kansas City, Mo.
He cited a survey of high school juniors by the federally backed
National Assessment of Educational Progress that showed many are
ignorant of the Soviet Union and the history of U.S.-Soviet
relations.
