DUESSELDORF Joseph Beuys, West Germany's best known leading
avant-garde artist, who once locked himself in a cage with a coyote
for 14 days, is dead at age 64, his personal secretary said
yesterday.
Johannes Stuettgen said Mr. Beuys died Thursday night after a
heart attack in his home just outside the city. He had been
suffering from a rare inflammation of the lungs since May.
Best known for his progressive, modernistic sculptures and
drawings, and for his multimedia performances, Mr. Beuys left behind
a trail of artistic and political controversy stretching back more
than 20 years.
