Christa McAuliffe had planned to wear a T-shirt with a simple
message as she became the first teacher in space: "I touched the
future. I teach."
Friday was to have been her first lesson from space. It would
have been broadcast from Challenger via satellite to grade schools,
high schools and colleges around the country.
The lesson plan: the connections between space and Earth,
science and everyday life, the importance of being good citizens, the
joy of serving your fellow man.
Instead, the 37-year-old McAuliffe's greatest adventure - "the
ultimate field trip" - ended in disaster yesterday when the space
