KRUGERSDORP, South Africa Police yesterday opened fire on about
2,000 women and schoolchildren marching on a police station to
denounce the presence of troops in black townships. Witnesses said a
black teenager was killed and five people were wounded.
A spokesman for police headquarters in Pretoria said he could
not confirm the incident in this town west of Johannesburg, as
"unrest reports" were only issued at specific times twice a day.
Witnesses to the event said 17-year-old Joseph Mono died when
police fired on a large group of women and pupils marching from
Krugersdorp's Munsieville township to a police station near the town
center.
