Deal with your cat's claws, don't make your cat deal without them,
is advice from cat breeder Jean B. Townsend.
"Declawing is cruel and unnecessary and a cat can be trained to
claw where you want it to,"she says, adding that "when an owner has
his cat declawed, he is telling that cat `I want all of you except
your claws. I am rejecting the thing that is the very essence of
your being.'
"One of the cat's most distinctive features is his claws. He
can extend them in a flash to slash out at an enemy or to climb to
safety. But, although his claws can be a source of annoyance to his
owner, declawing is a form of mutilation," says Townsend, who has
