UNIONDALE, N.Y. The strange story of Tiffany Chin may be headed for an unhappy ending.

The reigning queen of American figure skating was soundly beaten by Debi Thomas, last year's runner-up, in yesterday's compulsories to start this year's championship.

Chin must now win the short program tomorrow to have a chance at retaining her crown in Saturday's concluding long program at Nassau Coliseum.

Thomas, a Stanford freshman bidding to become America's first black skating queen, didn't expect to win the compulsories. That's Chin's specialty.
