WASHINGTON Interior Secretary Donald P. Hodel yesterday fired
Lee A. Iacocca from his unpaid job as head of the commission that
will help decide how of millions in contributions are to be spent to
restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
"This is a grab for four years worth of contributions by the
American people," said the Chrysler Corp. chairman.
A west suburban Hinsdale man was named to succeed him.
Iacocca will remain as chairman of the separate fund-raising
foundation that has collected more than $233 million for the
restoration.
He was appointed chairman of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island
Centennial Commission by James G. Watt when he was secretary of the
interior, ...
