Donald Russell Jr., 87, reporter, editor, expert on the
American West and biographer of "Buffalo Bill" Cody, died Monday in
St. Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich.
Mr. Russell, of Elmhurst, was the author of The Lives and
Legends of Buffalo Bill, a 1960 book that was praised by reviewers
for portraying Cody honestly, but unsentimentally, as a hero. In
preparation, Mr. Russell read 1,700 dime novels as well as more
credible accounts of Cody's exploits, such as Army records.
Born in 1899 in Huntington, Ind., Mr. Russell attended
Northwestern University, served in the Army for two years during
World War I, then was graduated from the University of Michigan.
