Hundreds of "unstable" patients are transferred to Cook County
Hospital from private hospitals because they don't have insurance,
with sometimes deadly results, according to research released today.
The results of the study, which exclude surgical patients,
reveal that nearly twice as many patients transferred to County
died, when compared with patients who were originally admitted to
County.
The report in the New England Journal of Medicine describes some
dramatic incidents of "economic transfers," in hospital industry
parlance, or "dumping," as some critics call it.
