Good move, Mr. Mayor
Mayor Washington, in a massive overhaul of the city's Economic
Development Commission, has opted to entrust the future of Chicago to
a younger generation of business leaders. He also made a dramatic
show of bipartisanship in tapping one of the city's most visible and
respected Republicans, Ronald Gidwitz, to chair the commission.
In one fell swoop, the mayor dismissed the old commission (most
of whose 19 members were serving expired terms anyway) and proposed
to replace it with a smaller panel.
It denigrates the outgoing commission not at all to observe that
the new appointees will bring a fresh outlook and new vigor to the
