ADELAIDE, Australia The din and the frenzy evoked a frantic morning
in the soybean pit at the Chicago Board of Trade.
But this was pleasure rather than business - the two-up pit of
the opulent new Adelaide Casino. Edging among the throng of excited
onlookers, I peered over shoulders to watch the action, succinctly
explained in the casino's brochure:
"This great Australian game is easy to play - simply wager on
how two pennies will land."
As the rules unfurled, two-up turned out to be a little more
complicated than that. But it was clearly a good-time game, and
