MESA, Ariz. Baseball is a funny game. It can be cruel or kind. And the older a player gets, the more he realizes it.

Dick Ruthven and Matt Keough, who are a combined 64 years of age with 19 years in the big leagues, find themselves making comebacks from injuries and fighting for the same spot on the Cubs.

They have different outlooks on the future. Ruthven knows what fans in Wrigley Field think of him; Keough is hoping to make an impression.

"The fans think I stink. They wonder what I'm doing on the Cubs," said Ruthven, who has handled fifth starter and long relief chores the last two years.
