Like a big Irish kid in no mood for a fight, Neil Hartigan has
struck a stiff-arm pose trying to hold Marty Oberman far enough away
to keep the little puncher from landing many blows.
Oberman, who is trying to knock Hartigan out of his job as
Illinois attorney general, didn't pick this fight. Hartigan hadn't
planned it this way, either.
The one-term attorney general and former lieutenant governor had
groomed himself to be governor. Hartigan, 47, seemed to have tied
down Democratic Party slating until Adlai E. Stevenson III gummed up
his plans by claiming first dibs on a grudge match with Gov.
Thompson.
For a while, Hartigan stuck to his gubernatorial script. "You
