A 5-cent stamp honoring Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black
was issued Feb. 27 in Washington, D.C., on the 100th anniversary of
his birth. The stamp is the latest addition to the Great Americans
Series.
Hugo LaFayette Black was born in Harlan, Ala. Though persuaded
by his mother to go to medical school, his real interest was law.
After a year of medical school, he transferred to the University of
Alambama Law School. He was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1906.
As a young lawyer in Ashland, Ala., Black was known for his
skillful case preparation and eloquent court manner. During this
