Article: William Jennings Bryan stamp debuts in Salem

A $2 Great Americans Series stamp depicting famed orator and legislator William Jennings Bryan was issued Wednesday at his birthplace in Salem, Ill.

William Jennings Bryan was one of American's most popular orators, with a remarkable ability to articulate the hopes and aspirations of his constituents. He was active in the political arena for more than 30 years, masterfully maneuvering among the Democratic, Silver Republic, National Silver and Populist parties.

Though Bryan lost the presidential race to William McKinley in 1986 and 1900, and William Howard Taft in 1908, he remained a major influence in the Democratic party.
