Article: Wieboldt bidding to buy Carson's

A group representing Chicago's struggling Wieboldt Stores yesterday offered to buy Carson Pirie Scott & Co. for $350 million.

Carson's managers declined to comment on the bid yesterday, but experts greeted the surprising move with skepticism.

The 102-year-old Wieboldt's and 132-year-old Carson's chains would be sister companies if the $35-per-share bid is accepted, said Wieboldt's Chairman Gil Granet, who heads the private Baytree Investors firm that proposed the takeover. "They'd be individual profit centers. There's no thought of a merger."

"Hopefully, it's a friendly offer," Granet said. "We'd like to see the present management continue" at Carson's.
