Article: Olive oil joins ranks with the health foods

Olive oil is fast becoming one of the hottest food trends to hit the American market; its popularity over such stock kitchen items as margarine or butter is increasing by the day among the health conscious.

By the end of last year, more than 40,000 tons of olive oil was purchased in the United States. That was 30 percent more than was bought in 1982, according to figures prepared by the International Olive Oil Council based in Madrid, Spain.

"That's because American shoppers have become more aware of their health, and that's changed food trends," says Leslie Greenberg of Myers CommuniCounsel of New York, which compiles data for the IOOC.
