You could say it started in the summer of 1982, with New Music
America's extravaganza of avant-garde music on the lake, at Navy
Pier, Oak Street Beach and Orchestra Hall.
Organized by the national New Music America group and sponsored
locally by the Museum of Contemporary Art and the city, that July
week of concerts drew enthusiastic audiences and fired up local
musicians and composers.
The momentum was too good to waste, some of them decided, so New
Music Chicago was launched in 1983.
The weeklong celebration of avant-garde music, much of it by
Chicago composers, is now held every spring. The fourth New Music
Chicago Spring Festival '86 opens at 12:15 p.m. Monday in Preston
