Was T.S. Eliot thinking of the challenge of Passover cuisine
when he wrote "April is the cruellest month"?
Probably not.
But every year, Jewish gourmets and gourmands are challenged by
eight days of dietary restrictions that have multiplied since the
days of the forbidden fruit.
This year, Passover begins at sundown Wednesday with the first
Seder, the traditional meal at which the story of the Jews' escape
from slavery in Egypt is retold. It's a flavorful evening, a mixture
of food and fact that triggers the memories - the bitterness of
slavery, the fullness of life, the renewal of spring and the
