"Me and my shadow" most accurately describes the plight of
Romeoville's Rhonda Luker last year.
After bettering the state record with a 13.8 clocking in the
100-meter low hurdles during the regular season, Luker watched as her
shadow - East St. Louis Lincoln's Nicolle Thompson - established
national records in the 100 (13.3) and 200-meter (27.0) low hurdles
in the state finals.
"It was back and forth with us all season," said Luker, who
finished second in the 100 and fourth in the 200. "I bettered the
record and Nicolle topped that (13.7). I tied her time at the
sectional but she beat that (13.5). She did her thing on her side of
town and I did mine on my side of town.
