Afew trees have died so that David Stockman's book may live, and
this week his publishers begin to find out if they should have paid
$2.4 million to Danielle Steele instead.
They should get some of their money back here, where the capital
already is in a froth over excerpts in Newsweek magazine of The
Triumph of Politics: Why the Reagan Revolution Failed.
Lunch and dinner talk in other cities may still revolve around the
direction of interest rates. But here, folks wonder whether
Stockman's book will damage President Reagan, the Republican Party,
or Stockman himself.
As a newcomer in town, I raise the question most likely to be
asked in the rest of the country - who cares?
