Article: 13% of U.S. adults are illiterate in English

WASHINGTON (UPI) Thirteen percent of U.S. adults are illiterate in English, the Census Bureau said yesterday.

The illiteracy rate for adults whose native language is English was found to be 9 percent, said Robert Barnes, supervisor of the study. For adults whose native language is not English, the rate was 48 percent, though a large portion of those probably are literate in their native language, he said.

The high illiteracy rate in native English speakers, Barnes said, is largely attributable to a school dropout rate of more than 20 percent. The study found that among native English-speakers classified as illiterate, 70 percent did not finish high school.
