WASHINGTON (UPI) Thirteen percent of U.S. adults are illiterate
in English, the Census Bureau said yesterday.
The illiteracy rate for adults whose native language is English
was found to be 9 percent, said Robert Barnes, supervisor of the
study. For adults whose native language is not English, the rate was
48 percent, though a large portion of those probably are literate in
their native language, he said.
The high illiteracy rate in native English speakers, Barnes
said, is largely attributable to a school dropout rate of more than
20 percent. The study found that among native English-speakers
classified as illiterate, 70 percent did not finish high school.
