Article: Mircea Eliade, authority on history of religions

Mircea Eliade, 79, a world authority on the history of religions who helped to establish the discipline in the United States as a professor at the University of Chicago, died yesterday in Bernard Mitchell Hospital.

Mr. Eliade wrote numerous books and articles on the discipline and taught many scholars who founded departments of the history of religions at other universities.

"He is the most exceptional scholar of religion of the 20th century," said Franklin Gamwell, dean of the Divinity School of the U. of C. "More than any other he has opened the Western mind to the religious possibilities and the immense religious experience of the human adventure."
