Article: `The woman I love' is dead

PARIS Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson, "the woman I love" for whom King Edward VIII gave up the British throne in 1936, died a bedridden recluse yesterday. She never achieved what had become an obsession with her: recognition as "her royal highness."

The duchess of Windsor was 89 and seldom had been seen outside her home near Paris since her husband died in 1972.

Her death, attributed to bronchial pneumonia, was reported in London by Buckingham Palace, which said she will be buried in Windsor Castle's Frogmore Garden next to her husband. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert also are buried there.
