Hooked rag rugs are an American creation based on thrift and talent.
Used pieces of cloth were torn into strips and worked into a burlap
background. The rugs became popular after a plentiful supply of
burlap was available to housewives in the 1850s.
The interest in rag rugs continued through the 19th century.
The later rugs often were designed by the makers and are classified
as examples of folk art.
Rugs picturing animals, houses, ships and even dancing couples
were made to be used on the floor. These rugs are cherished by
today's collectors and often are hung on the wall like paintings.
