The Soviet nuclear disaster raises concerns about the hazards of
radiation. In a series of interviews with experts, including Edward
W. Webster, chief of radiation sciences at Massachusetts General
Hospital and a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, United
Press International compiled the following explanations:
Q. What types of radioactive substances could have been
released?
A. Included among more than 50 radioactive materials that could
have been released are five that pose the most concern: xenon,
krypton, radioactive iodine, cesium and strontium. Xenon and krypton
