Judging by the furor over employee narcotics testing, you might
suppose that most of the work force in the United States is wandering
around in a daze.
How bad is the narcotics problem? The Bureau of Business
Practice says businesses are losing $16 billion a year to narcotics
and alcohol use. Studies have found that one of every 10 people in
the country smokes marijuana at least once a month. Some 5 million
are classified as frequent users of cocaine, and as many as 10
million more are occasional users.
The federal government - through the National Institute of Drug
Abuse and the President's Commission on Organized Crime - has been
urging employers to consider testing for narcotics use ...
