Article: Interpublic newest suitor for Bates

Saatchi & Saatchi PLC is not the only giant advertising company interested in acquiring Ted Bates Worldwide. Bates, with $3.1 billion in 1985 billings, also is hearing overtures from Interpublic Group of Cos., agency sources say.

Interpublic, with $4.7 billion in billings last year, is neck-and-neck for the No. 1 spot with the new holding company formed by the merger of BBDO International, Doyle Dane Bernbach Group and Needham Harper Worldwide. Interpublic's Philip H. Geier Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer, was not available for comment on the acquistion proposal.
