After surviving for more than two seasons on the fringe of the
Cubs' roster, Dick Ruthven yesterday was placed on waivers to give
him his unconditional release.
Ruthven's release was necessitated by Lee Smith's return to the
active roster. Smith had been on the disabled list since April 21
after straining his right groin muscle the previous day.
The Cubs, who offered Ruthven a spot on their Class AAA Iowa
team, will be stuck with Ruthven's $800,000 salary. If Ruthven is
picked up by another team, that team will have to pay Ruthven the
major league minimum $60,000 and the Cubs will have to pay the rest
of his salary.
