Secretly, people in and around baseball are rooting for Dave
Kingman to hit 30 home runs this season, next season and the year
after.
That would put Kingman, who entered 1986 with 407 homers, on the
front porch of the elite 500 Club. And, down the line, on the
doorstep of the Hall of Fame.
His supporters envision Kingman, a man famous for dumping water
on an unsuspecting reporter, knocking on Cooperstown's door. And a
bucket of water - nay, a huge plastic trash can of ice and water -
splashing him in the face.
The ice water - hurled by the writers Kingman often degraded,
the men who vote for the Hall of Fame - would be cold reality:
Kingman could become the first man to hit 500 homers ...
