a 1983 fund-raising dinner, Percy and President Reagan shared a few
words. RIGHT: Percy and his successor, Paul Simon, shake loaded
fingers at one another during a 1984 appearance on WBBM-Channel 2's
"News-makers." Percy always was a charming campaigner. During a 1964
run for Illinois governor, the candidate bussed an insistent Marge
Hoesley and . . . . . . her reaction tells the story. While Percy
did not win the election, it seems pretty likely he won one vote that
day on the campaign trail. Today, the former senator uses his charm
and savvy while working with foreign leaders such Japanese Prime
Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone.
