CARACAS Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498, Venezuela has
yet to be discovered by American tourists.
Oh, you'll find them in the country's popular beach resorts such
as Merida and the island of La Margarita. But to most Americans who
have been to Venezuela, it was just a quick port of call at Caracas
on a Caribbean cruise.
But "adventure" and "bargains" are the operative words here in
this home of South American liberator Simon Bolivar, the continent's
largest oil fields, and the chilling Orinoco branch of the Amazon
River.
You'll find Venezuelan tourist brochures full of beachfront
hotels and resort choices. But if you are the adventurous type and
don't mind some bargain ...
