NEW YORK When Lillian Gish walked into the room high above the East
Side of Manhattan, her small, almost childish frame was bent with
age, but she retained the dignity of a queen, smiling a 19th century
smile as she politely asked her visitor to have a seat.
Once on the sofa, the visitor said how pleased he was to meet
Miss Gish.
"When Mr. D.W. Griffith (the film director) first heard that
name, he said, `Gish. Pish. Dish. Fish. That's a terrible name
for an actress,' " she responded. "And (sister) Dorothy said, `If it
was good enough for Mother, it's good enough us.' So we didn't change
it. Would you like some tea?"
Miss Gish, 89, who starred in, among others, Griffith's Civil
War ...
