Food historians suggest that the first mention of cheesecake was in
1440. However, Demosthenes, Aristophanes and Socrates all left notes
on the subject, and one of the best of the earliest cooks - Cato, the
philosopher - delighted his fellow Romans with a recipe for
cheesecake that was rich in cheese and honey, thick with eggs, and
flavored with poppy seeds. Also, the Greek historian Athenaeus wrote
exhaustively about this splendid dessert.
