My father loved chocolate cake above all others. With a penchant
for sweets, he seemed to enjoy almost any cake that was served, but
his preference for chocolate didn't escape my young eye. A man of
few words, he expressed his pleasure with a satisfied smile and
requests for "another small slice, please."
When I was just old enough to venture into the kitchen without
my mother's supervision, I planned a Father's Day surprise that I
knew would please him enormously. Of course, it was a chocolate
cake. According to him, it was the best present he'd ever gotten.
And I know that money couldn't have bought a better present.
