Article: 2 chalices offered to church hit by burglars

The Rev. William O'Connor's faith in people has been reinforced by two offers of chalices to replace those stolen from St. Basil's Church in a burglary early Tuesday.

Five chalices and four candlesticks, valued at about $2,000, were taken from the church at 1850 W. Garfield by burglars who pried a grille from a window.

Relatives of two former parishioners of the South Side church offered yesterday to donate chalices that were given them at funerals at St. Basil's, he said.

"Chalices used to be given as a memorial at the funeral," O'Connor explained. "One person said that their mother died in the 1920s and they wanted to donate the chalice in memory of her.
