Last of two parts
BELEM, Brazil This South American nation is most often thought of as
the land of Amazon lushness and Rio de Janeiro's Carnaval. But I
discovered that the cities of the Amazon and northeast regions are
equally interesting, offering a mixture of natural splendor, multiple
cultures and tourist attractions.
Having circled back to Manaus, the gateway to the Amazon region,
I flew to Belem. Here I drifted through the Ver O Peso Market
(literally, "to see the weight"), where one could buy goods ranging
from fresh fish to folk-medicine cures for everything from athlete's
foot to impotence.
Anxious to visit Marajo Island, off the shores of Belem, I
