PARIS Thanks to a certain event in Mexico, the start of this
year's Tour de France was pushed back a few days from the usual date,
to Independence Day in the U.S.
Greg Lemond takes this as a good omen for his prospects of
becoming the first American to win cycling's toughest but most
prestigious road race, after finishing second last year to veteran
teammate Bernard Hinault of France.
The likeliest people to resist American hegemony are three other
English speakers, Irishman Stephen Roche (third in 1985), Scottish
mountain specialist Robert Millar and his Australian teammate Phil
Anderson (fifth last year).
