Article: Fanfani asked to mediate Italy's stalemate

ROME Italian President Francesco Cossiga yesterday asked Christian Democrat Amintore Fanfani, president of the Senate and a former prime minister, to try to mediate a solution to the government crisis that followed the fall of Italy's longest postwar administration.

Cossiga's decision came after what sources described as a night of stormy consultations with the resigned prime minister, Bettino Craxi, and Ciriaco de Mita, leader of the Christian Democrats, Italy's largest party. Craxi is leader of the Socialists, the second largest party.
