On sizzling summer weekends, thousands of Chicagoans pile the kids
in the car, wheel onto the Tri-State Tollway, and whiz through Lake
County on their way to Wisconsin.
But turn off the six-lane concrete raceway that bisects Lake
County and take a lazy drive on the backroads, and you'll enter
another world.
Meadows with mature trees, tall grass, cornfields and lakes dot
the landscape. Pockets of new single-family home subdivisions, old
farmhouses, horse farms and stables, off-the-dirt-road gas stations
and scores of golf courses abound.
This 454-square-mile county with a population of 440,372 is a
mecca of exurban tranquility. Commuter train stops are in the heart
